It’s been nearly two and a half years since Miley Cyrus released her Grammy-award-winning breakup anthem, “Flowers.” And it seems some fans are still super caught up on that theory about Jennifer Lawrence.
To keep you up to speed, “Flowers” is thought to be inspired by Miley’s 2019 divorce from Liam Hemsworth. Miley and Liam were together — albeit on and off — for about a decade, during which time Liam was probably best known for his work on the Hunger Games movies alongside, you guessed it, Jennifer Lawrence.
As the story goes, Liam and J.Law were speculated to have had some kind of romantic fling while they shot The Hunger Games between 2012 and 2015. It’s worth noting that there isn’t a huge amount of weight to this rumor, other than the fact that Jennifer previously confirmed that she and Liam once kissed off-camera.
Anyway, fast forward to early 2023, and Liam and Miley’s relationship became a huge topic of conversation with the release of “Flowers.” Both the song and its accompanying video had fans scouring for clues and subtle hints about the divorce, which led fans to fixate on a particular gold dress that Miley wears at the start of the video.
Miley’s hooded YSL Fall 1991 gown looked pretty similar to the golden Prabal Gurung dress that Jennifer wore alongside Liam at the LA premiere of the first Hunger Games movie back in 2012, which led fans to speculate that Miley was shading her ex’s former costar in the “Flowers” video, maybe calling back to some alleged betrayal.
Honestly, looking back, the whole thing feels a little far-fetched. But, at the time, the rumor was literally everywhere. In fact, the speculation became such a big deal that Jennifer leapt at the chance to shut it down during an interview with Andy Cohen in June 2023. “Not true…Total rumor,” she said, telling Andy that the golden dresses were presumably just a “coincidence.” “We all know we only kissed one time, and it was years after they broke up.”
And so, nearly two years after Jennifer refuted the rumors from her perspective, Miley is doing the same. While greeting fans outside Jimmy Kimmel Live last week, someone asked the Hannah Montana star: “Was your ‘Flowers’ dress a reference to Jennifer Lawrence?”
Well, there ya have it, folks. I think it’s about time we let this one go for good.
